The Magic Flute part 2


Each character is described in the questions below. To begin this assignment first carefully read all questions. Please choose and then answer 5 questions. Use your memory ONLY of what you recall about the people and events you saw in The Magic Flute. Do NOT use outside materials such as notes, web pages, books, etc. Have your 5 answers completed by Friday morning. Friday afternoon we will review ALL the questions and answers.



1] At the opera’s beginning we see, Tamino, the handsome young prince asking to be protected from what?

2] Papageno, the singing bird-catcher, sings a song telling us about his job catching birds and that he is a happy man. After Tamino awakes from his deep sleep, the bird-catcher tells the prince that it was he, Papageno, who saved his life. Was Papageno telling the truth? What happens to Papageno next?

3] Both Tamino and Papageno are given magical instruments. Tamino is given a flute and Papageno is given a bell. How did Tamino and Papageno use their magic?

4] The handsome prince Tamino has fallen in love with princess Pamina who is being held captive by the jealous and greedy Monostatos. Who sent Tamino to rescue the princess and why?

5] Tamino is given four tests by Sarastro, the royal guard at gate of wisdom. If Tamino is successfully and passes each test, he will have earned the love of his princess, Pamina. Name 3 of Tamino’s tasks.

6] Re-invent the story of Pamina an Tamino. What characters will you meet? What form of magic will you be given? What tasks might you face?

7] Is there a moral to the story? Explain, as best you can, what this moral might be.

8] Draw one (or more) of your favorite scenes in The Magic Flute” with as much attention to detail (color, costumes, characters, and people) as possible. Explain to at least three people what happened in the scene you are drawing.

9] List the events that you remember most about the performance of The Magic Flute. What did you enjoy most? Why?
